Edgar Meyer; bass extraodinaire

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

Edgar Meyer recently made his debut in Eau Claire, WI at the Pablo Center for the Arts and unfortunately, I was made aware after the fact. A private voice student of mine that plays electric bass in bands around town took his son to see this bass extraordinaire.

This afternoon I asked Alexa to play Edgar Meyer music and was shocked to hear what I thought was a cello. Hours later at the computer, I was compelled to watch and hear more, so handy-dandy youtube showed me a new world.

Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Stuart Duncan performing bluegrass at an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. A must see. Each quarter of this ensemble is so well versed on his instrument it's like a fifth appendage with just as much mobility as an arm and as much expression as a full bodied dancer. Aoife O'Donovan comes on for the third song and provides exquisite harmonies.

Further down the youtube tunnel, Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck, so in-sync, and even further, collaborations with Mark O'Connor and Joshua Bell among others.

The man is a master conduit of J.S. Bach and popular American vernacular. Check out the links below to purchase some of Edgar Meyer's marvelous recordings.
